Web 2.0 is a newer term use for the next generation of the web.  Simply stated, you can consider Web 1.0 as static website pages and Web 2.0 as interactive websites.  You’re not just publishing data in Web 2.0, you’re providing user participation with what you published. It facilitates information sharing, interoperability, and collaboration.  This doesn’t mean that there’s a technical upgrade to hardware or specifications, but a way in which developers and end users use the web.

Examples of Web 2.0 are web applications, blogs, social networking site, wikis and video sharing to name a few.  A good example of a Web 2.0 feature is tagging.  Content can be tagged to provide an easier way for the end-user to search for information.  This can create a way for users to independently search for content and not rely on pre-defined categories.

Does all of this mean that I have to invest allot more money into my website?  Not really.  The way you think of your website and how it works will change a little.  Your site will do more than present text and pictures, phone numbers and an address.  It is an extension of your business.  It will allow you to sell products and services online, generate leads and customer loyalty, build a community, keep your customers informed, improve customer service and promote your business.

For example, every business site should have a solid FAQ (frequently asked questions) sections.  How many calls do you get concerning the same questions?  This area should have a FAQ part or tool, web forms and perhaps a secure customer area for order or for sensitive information.  Develop a customer support section and let the website work for you.

You don’t have to do everything Web 2.0 has to offer, but implementing one or two items could help take your site to the next level.  Some of the Web 2.0 features may not even be practical for your website at this time, but  having an understanding of what Web 2.0 has to offer may give you a competitive edge for when you do integrate it into your website.
